The United States Armed Forces was founded in 1775. As of December 2013, 40 million men and women have served in the US Military (McGaugh). While a lot has changed over those years, and improvements have been made, it’s not hard to see that our service members are clearly undervalued. The men and women who serve our country risk their lives every day, and a large number never return home. Those who do return home often deal with physical and psychological challenges. It’s our job as a country to make sure these men and women are getting all that they deserve. There is quite the controversy when it comes to our service member’s pay. Some say it’s too high while others would argue it’s too low and it’s often a topic of debate. While budget cuts are being made in nearly every department, I don’t feel as if the compensation for those defending our freedom is treated as a priority. Military yearly pay increases are the lowest they have been in over 39 years, Ranking in at one percent and have stayed in that range since 2010 (Katz). How can you put a price on someone defending our freedom? The average state side single soldier who holds the rank of a specialist works roughly 58 hours a week, which would break down their hourly wages to earning $10.12 before taxes (DFAS). In my opinion, this makes them the most underpaid profession.
